Ontario Association of Osteopaths
Welcome to the web site of the Ontario Association of Osteopaths (OAO). In this site you will find valuable information on osteopathic practice in the province of Ontario, Canada.
The OAO site is regularly updated with the current Osteopathy news and events and ways the public can access osteopathic practitioners in their area.
Osteopathy is both a natural medicine and a treatment philosophy which seeks to identify areas of the body that are restricted or constricted, then gently ease these restrictions so that normal function can resume. Osteopathy definition: as a natural medicine, osteopathy applies the knowledge of the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body, to all diseases, disorders and dysfunctions. The tools osteopaths use are their hands. Osteopaths use a gentle “hands-on” or “manual” approach to identify the causative factor of the problem and restore order to all of the systems: musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, or nervous system.
Man is composed of matter, movement, and spirit. - A.T. Still, Founder of Osteopathy
As a philosophy, there is not one technique that is specific to osteopathy, but its practice demands the body be addressed as an integrated unit and respect be given to all of the components of the patient: Body, Mind, and Spirit.
The OAO’s mission is to advance the profession of osteopathy by unifying its members and educating the public. The OAO is committed to promoting the highest, safest level of osteopathic practice in the province of Ontario.
