Who Provides Osteopathy?

There are 2 groups of professionals who practice osteopathically and utilize an osteopathic approach.

Osteopathic Manual Practitioners have extensive training in traditional manual osteopathic practice, but they are not medical doctors. They treat patients using only manual techniques applied using an osteopathy philosophy and in Canada can be recognized by the professional designation DO(MP) or DOMTP- signifying the practitioner holds a Diploma that specializes in osteopathic manual practice. The training required to become an manual practitioner of Osteopathy is also available in; The United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, Greece, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Isreal, Portugal, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and New Zealand.

Osteopathic Physicians are recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. However, the training needed to become an osteopathic physician is not available in Canada - these practitioners get their training exclusively in the United States. They have a medical degree from a college approved by the American Osteopathic Association. They are licenced physicians who use an osteopathic philosophy and who may have some osteopathic manual training. Osteopathic Physicians can be recognized by the professional designation of D.O - Doctor of OsteopathyMother and child..
