What is an Osteopath?
There are 2 groups of professionals who practice osteopathy and osteopathic treatments in Ontario.
Osteopathic Physicians are recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. However, the training needed to become an osteopathic physician is not available in Canada - these practitioners get their training in the United States. They have a medical degree from a college approved by the American Osteopathic Association. They are licenced physicians who also have osteopathic manual training. In the US, Osteopathic Physicians can be recognized by the professional designation D.O - Doctor of Osteopathy.
Osteopaths have extensive training in manual osteopathic practice, but they are not medical doctors. They treat patients using only manual techniques and in Canada can be recognized by the professional designation DOMP or DO(MP)- signifying the practitioner holds a Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Practice. The training required to become an osteopath is available in Canada the UK (DO(UK)) and Russia (DO(R)).
